The Public Works Department has expedited the construction of combined court complex near the beach here.

A series of soil tests was conducted to ascertain the quality of soil and it was finally decided to go in for pile foundation. The work, being executed at an estimate of Rs. 10.65 crore, includes buildings for munsif court, district court and family court which are functioning at different places in the town. It would accommodate the Legal Aid Cell wing, a library, record room and media room.

Official source told The Hindu that the area of 2,350 square metres is being best utilised for providing various amenities to judicial officers, litigant public and lawyers. A compound has been constructed around the campus except in the front to facilitate free movement of building materials. An exclusive office has been functioning at the site for closely monitoring the progress of the work. Quality water is being brought from outside to ensure stability of the building. “As the ground water in the shore area is highly saline and not suitable for construction, we have been bringing water by trucks," he said. The plinth area of the new building will be 1,850 square metre on the ground floor and 850 square metre on the first floor.

The work is being executed in packages. While court buildings are being constructed in the first phase, additional infrastructure including quarters for judicial officers would come up in the next.
