Cotton auction

fetches Rs. 10 lakh

Cotton was auctioned for Rs. 10 lakh at the Agricultural Produce Marketing Cooperative Society at Konganapuram near Edappadi on Saturday.

While DCH variety fetched a price between Rs. 5,900 and Rs. 6,450 per bag; ‘Surabhi’ variety fetched a price between 4,850 and Rs. 5,550. About 600 cotton bags were auctioned for Rs. 10 lakh, according to society sources.

About 45 bags of Ellu (sesame seeds) were auctioned for Rs. two lakh on the same occasion. A kg of ellu was priced between Rs. 62 and Rs. 71.

Arrested for

damaging windshield

The Police arrested three persons on charge of damaging the windshield of a private bus at Puthiragoundanpalayam near here on Saturday.

Police sources said that four youth were travelling on footboard of a private bus proceeding to Salem from Attur. The bus conductor questioned them for the footboard travel, which led to a wordy quarrel. The youth got down at Puthiragoundanpalayam bus stop. Later, when the bus was on its return trip to Attur, the four damaged the front windshield. On a complaint, Ethapur police arrested Govindan (22), Manikandan (19) and Vignesh (22). The police are on the lookout for one more.

Fine imposed

J. Meghanath Reddy, Sub- Collector, Mettur, imposed a fine of Rs. 8,000 each on two cattle traders for transporting cattle in lorries. The Sub-Collector was proceeding near the Mettur Thermal Power Station, when he intercepted a couple of lorries transporting cattle from Uthangarai in Krishnagiri district to the cattle shandy in Anthiyur in Erode district. He warned the traders against over loading and imposed a fine of Rs. 8,000 on each of them.
