Sr. Rosy, Provincial, Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod, Province of Tiruchi, released a book “Enriching Communication Skills in English – Vol. II” at a function organised by the English Literary Association of the Department of English, Holy Cross College.
Sr. Jeusin Francis, Principal, received the first copy. The book, edited by Catherin Edward, Associate Professor in English, is meant for college-level learners and lays stress on the four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Sr. Rosy spoke on celebrating literature and the role it plays in spreading values through its plethora of texts. She also mentioned how English and literature help in grooming efficient leaders with good communication skills.
Sr. Judy Gomez, Head, Department of English, was present.
Feat by students
A group of students from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s Horticultural College and Research Institute for Women brought laurels to the institute by winning the runner-up position in “TALENTIA 2016”, a State-level inter-collegiate cultural contest, organised by the TNAU Agricultural College and Research Institute and the Home Science College and Research Institute, Madurai.
M. Jawaharlal, Dean of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s Horticultural College and Research Institute for Women, congratulated them at a function held in Tiruchi.
The students participated in events, including ‘creative writing,’ ‘Turn Quote,’ quiz, short film, spot photography, classical solo, non-classical solo, fusion dance, group dance, ‘Voice Of Talentia 2016’ and rangoli.
The first prize in classical solo went to K.Y. Ardra.
The students also won the second prize for fusion dance and group dance; two third prizes for photography and short film.
Seminar
S. Papu Benjamin Ilango, Associate Professor, Department of English, St. Joseph’s College, spoke on “One literature, one humanity,” at a seminar organised by the Vista English Association of Chidambaram Pillai College for Women.
He gave a detailed account of the various critical approaches such as feministic, moralistic, sociological, psychological and the archetypal. S. Ramalingam, Principal, was present.
Workshop
Over 550 girl students and staff members from various schools in Karur district participated in a workshop on “Yoga and its role in healthy human life,” organised by Sri Sarada Niketan College of Science for Women, Karur.
Chithra, Ayurveda Consultant, Government Primary Health Care Centre, Sengal, inaugurated the workshop.
Srinivasan, Managing Trustee, NIVRITHI Educational and Social Trust, presided. Chellammal, social worker, gave yoga practice to students.
Symposium
Sahitya Akademi in collaboration with Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College organised a centenary symposium on Professor N. Subbu Reddiyar.
In the inaugural session A.S. Ilangovan, Officer-in- charge, Sahitya Akademi, Chennai, K. Nachimuthu, Convenor, Tamil Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, R. Kamarasu, General Council Member, Sahitya Akademi, spoke on the services rendered by Subbu Reddiyar.
G. Bhaskaran, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil University, Thanjavur, spoke at length on the experiences he had with Reddiyar as a Professor.
He stated that Reddiyar’s Tamil works ranged from philosophy to generality and literature to science.
M. Jayanthi, Principal, Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, provided glimpses of the life of Subbu Reddiyar and the hardships he underwent.
S. Ramalingam, son of Reddiyar, felicitated and elaborated on the events held in various places in connection with the end of the centenary year and wanted the students to read the digitized books of Reddiyar.
Maraimalai Ilakuvanar, a distinguished scholar, said that Reddiyar, a teacher, philosopher and guide, had been the inspiration for many persons.
Stress on communication skills
Students should develop their communication skills for achieving greater goals in life, said Rev. C. Joe Arun, S.J. Director of St. Joseph’s Institute of Management of St. Joseph’s College.
Speaking at a function organised by the Commerce Association recently, he spoke on the importance of developing communication skills. Rev. Bro. I. Stephen Savariraj, Principal of Infant Jesus Matriculation School, Ramanathapuram, spoke on the relevance of leadership qualities.
V. Bastin Jerome, president of Commerce Association, said that the programme marked the inauguration of the Association.
Saplings planted
Over 60 saplings were planted at Saranathan College of Engineering at an event organised by the Eco Club of the college. G. Roy Antony, Campus Connect Coordinator, Chennai region, Infosys, was the chief guest.
S. Ravindran, Secretary of the college, and D. Valavan, Principal, were present.
