A Bengaluru-based couple was arrested by the Kanchi Taluk Police on Friday night on charges of cheating government officials to get accommodation at the government-owned Circuit House in the District Collectorate campus here at Kancheepuram.

According to police, the accused, Thirumaran (45) of Bengaluru and his wife, Nikitha (38), got a room allotted at Circuit House on January 10 under the NGO category. They had not vacated the premises even after ten days.

The matter was brought to the attention of the VIP tahsildar, Ramesh, who lodged a complaint with the District Police stating that the couple was refusing to vacate.

The couple was picked up from the Circuit House on Friday.

A case under Section 420 of IPC was booked against them as the couple “failed to give a convincing reason” for extending their stay at the Circuit House.

It is believed that the couple was holed up at Circuit House to evade the Bengaluru police, who were looking for them in connection with some irregularity committed in that city.
