Vehicular traffic on Kazhugumalai– Sankarankovil Road was affected for a while on Friday after a group of villagers blocked the road, condemning the torching of the car of an All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam functionary and the damage caused to the bust of late Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran.

Police said that P. Gopi (44), Kazhugumalai town secretary of the AIADMK, had parked his car near his house on Thursday night. Some unidentified miscreants set the car afire, and the front portion of the vehicle got badly damaged.

The miscreants also damaged the bust of MGR installed in Indraprastha Street.

Road blocked

Condemning the criminal acts, a group of people blocked Kazhugumalai– Sankarankovil Road.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Murugavel assured the protestors of appropriate action, following which they withdrew the agitation.

The police said that Mr. Gopi was actively campaigning in support of the party’s candidate for Kovilpatti constituency Kadambur C. Raju, who won the battle of ballots by a thin margin of 428 votes.

Suspicion

Hence, the police suspect that the attack could be the handiwork of his political opponents.
