AAP to support activist who took on sand mafia

April 25, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - TIRUPUR:

Aam Aadmi Party, which is not fielding any candidates, has announced its support to independent candidate D. Prabhakaran (29), an activist who successfully took on sand mafia and the bureaucracy at Puthupalayam here.

Mr. Prabhakaran will be contesting from Tirupur North constituency and would file the nominations on Monday.

Crusade

AAP district convener S. Sundarapandian told The Hindu that the party decided to support Prabhakaran as he had crusaded sincerely against corruption and the nexus between people involved in mining and the bureaucracy.

Mr. Prabhakarn became popular after he singlehandedly took on the mafia involved in the illegal sand mining at an irrigation tank in Puthupalayam area. The mining took place despite there was a court ban in the area.

Legal battles

Mr. Prabhakaran continued with the legal battles and succeeded in stopping the mining.
