A total of 83,380 individual toilets would be built in the district this financial year so as to improve personal hygiene among the masses, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.
Addressing officials here on Thursday, N. Subbaiyan, District Collector, said the toilets would be built under the Swaach Bharat Mission and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
While 31,700 toilets would be built under the first programme, the remaining 51,680 units would be set up under the MGNRES.
He advised the officials of the District Rural Development Agency to draft a proposal. Selected villages would be declared as “open defecation-free” zone by September 25, he said.
