Talks alone can win over Kashmiris, says Antony

August 24, 2016 01:34 am | Updated 07:44 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Former Defence Minister and senior Congress leader A.K. Antony has said that use of force is no way to win over the Kashmiris.

Releasing a collection of articles written by members of a journalist delegation to Kashmir under the Kesari Memorial Journalists’ Trust here on Tuesday, Mr. Antony said the Centre should immediately begin a dialogue in Kashmir and not persist with its present strategy of relying entirely on use of force to resolve the situation there.

“It will be dangerous to cause provocation with uncalled for bluster. The accusation that all the misguided youth of the Valley are militants and anarchists would only aggravate the situation. We should be able to talk and behave more decently and in a more humane manner and our effort should be to resolve the crisis situation in Kashmir through a political dialogue. This is not going to be easy, but if we delay any further, things will go out of hand,” Mr. Antony said.

"Regaining people's confidence not easy"

The biggest challenge in Kashmir is to regain the confidence of the people. This, he said, will be possible only through a political initiative.
