G.L. Singhal, who was on Wednesday reintegrated into the Gujarat IPS after a one-and-half-year suspension, continues to stand by the authenticity of the recorded tapes that fuelled the ‘Snoopgate’ controversy.
Asked if he would still defend the audio recordings of conversations between him and former Home Minister Amit Shah, which the Central Bureau of Investigation had seized from his house, Mr. Singhal told The Hindu “definitely”, but did not elaborate. The CBI had, while probing the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case last year, seized a pen drive containing the audio files.
Leaving a turbulent past behind, Mr. Singhal said he wanted to begin his new innings with a clean slate.
“Being a cop, my first priority is to serve in whatever assignment given to me anywhere. Previously, there were different configurations and criteria. I have learnt a lot. I am going to be helpful to the department. When you are in the water, you will face some dangers,” he said.
Mr. Singhal, who has been reinstated as Group Commandant of the State Reserve Police, is likely to assume charge on Monday.
