Police foil JKLF bid to take out rally in Srinagar

February 11, 2016 12:42 am | Updated 12:42 am IST - SRINAGAR:

Police on Wednesday stopped the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) from taking out a rally here as the Valley braced for another shutdown on Thursday on the death anniversary of Maqbool Bhat, the co-founder of the separatist group.

Scores of JKLF activists were rounded up as they tried to march towards the city centre Lal Chowk, demanding the mortal remains of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, who was hanged in 2013, and Maqbool Bhat, who was hanged in 1984.

‘Stain on humanity’

“Denying a proper burial is a stain on justice and humanity,” said JKLF leader Noor Muhammad Kalwal.

The police action sparked a shutdown in Lal Chowk, where traffic was suspended. The authorities plan to impose curfew-like restrictions on Thursday in parts of Srinagar to avoid untoward incidents in the wake of the separatist shutdown call on Bhat’s death anniversary.
