Out of the 18,452 villages without electricity at the beginning of this financial year , more than 5000 have been electrified, Power Minister Piyush Goyal told reporters here on Friday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised to electrify all villages within 1,000 days from August 15, 2015,

In Uttar Pradesh 1039 villages and 606 villages in Assam were electrified.

Bihar, which the BJP lost miserably months back, saw 1591 villages being electrified.

“This means that power has reached these villages. To take it to each home in the villages is the next step,” Mr. Goyal said. “This work has been done in difficult terrain, naxal areas, etc. It was pending for decades.”

The number of villages electrified in the Maoist-hit Chhattisgarh is 242.

“More work is in progress in various stages. One-third of the target is done,” Mr. Goyal said.
