Our courts can ignore Indian laws and look up to international laws to uphold human rights, Supreme Court judge A.K. Sikri said in New Delhi on Saturday.

Speaking at a synmposium, Justice Sikri said he had to to bank on international human rights laws to recognise transgenders as third gender. He was referring to the historic judgment that he and Justice Radhakrishnan pronounced in 2014.

"World War II impacted our Constitution-makers and fundamental rights, as a means to ensure human dignity, should never be compromised," said Justice Sikri.
