Souza’s work fetches Rs.16.84 cr.

Saffronart’s 15th anniversary sale of modern and contemporary masterpieces totalled to Rs.82,60,45,000 in one evening.

The auctions made heads turn as an F.N. Souza work sold for Rs.16.84 crore. Other big sales included works by G. Ravinder Reddy at Rs.2.70 crore and Nilima Sheikh at Rs.1.02 crore.

The live auction held at The Oberoi that attracted art patrons, collectors, dealers and connoisseurs featured some of the most eminent Indian artists such as Souza, Tyeb Mehta, MF Husain, SH Raza, Jehangir Sabavala, Bharti Kher, Subodh Gupta, and Jagannath Panda amongst other names, many coming from illustrious private collections.

Souza’s work that fetched a record price was titled ‘Man and Woman Laughing’ (1957). The painting was from the collection of Harold Kovner, Souza’s most important patron and belongs to a particularly vital period of the artist’s career.

Other big sales included works by G. Ravinder Reddy at Rs.2.70 crore and Nilima Sheikh at Rs.1.02 crore
