President Pranab Mukherjee has given his consent to attend two convocation programmes in Tripura. Official sources said he will arrive in Agartala on June 20 on a two day visit during which he will also inaugurate a thermal power project in south Tripura.
President Mukherjee would attend the 10th convocation of Tripura Central University in Agartala on the day he arrives. He would be the chief guest of 5th convocation National Institute of Technology (NIT) on the following day.
Tripura Central University has the privilege to receive highest dignitaries in its convocation programmes. Erstwhile President Pratibha Patil attended the convocation in 2011.
History was created when Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina joined the university convocation last year. This was first ever visit by a foreign head of state in Tripura.
Vice President Hamid Ansari was also present to mark the occasion. Union minister Kapil Sibal was the chief guest at NIT convocation in 2012.
President Pranab Mukherjee earlier accepted an invitation from the Tripura government to inaugurate 726 MW power plant at Palatana in south Tripura. ONGC has the major share in the plant installed in partnership with Tripura government and Power Grid Corporation of India.
The project is currently on the trial run and expected to be ready for full operation before the President formally inaugurates it. Palatana project would help Tripura overcome its electricity deficiency.
Mr. Mukherjee will inaugurate the plant on the afternoon of June 21, official sources said. Tripura Governor Devanand Konwar and Chief Minister Manik Sarkar would accompany President in all the programmes.
