The Polasara police station in Ganjam district of Odisha was ransacked and torched by an angry mob on Monday after a group of miscreants murdered the mother of a girl who had protested against lewd remarks passed at her daughter by a group of men.

Carrying the body of the woman, the villagers blocked the road at Polasara demanding the arrest of the culprits. They burnt tyres at the spot. Later the mob entered the Polasara police station premises and ransacked it. Some even torched the police station as well as a police jeep, ten bikes and some cycles at its premises.

Speaking to The Hindu , Inspector General of Police (IGP), Southern Range, Amitabh Thakur said all files, furniture and computer of the Polasara police station were damaged in the arson by the mob. The font portion of the police station suffered much damage in the violence.

This incident was sparked off by the harassment of a girl at Bhabarada village. A few days ago, one Manoj Nahak of Bhabarada and his accomplices passed lewd comments at a girl of the same village. The parents of the girl, Praksh Swain and his wife Kamala Swain, had lodged a complaint about it at the Polasara police station.

Irked by it Manoj and his accomplices had allegedly attacked Prakash and Kamala on Sunday while they were working in their agricultural field. Prakash had managed to escape with some injuries, but the attackers beat up Kamala ruthlessly with an iron rod. She died on her way to hospital.

With reports of violence by the mob, senior police officers, including the IGP and Berhampur Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashis Singh, rushed to Polasara. Seven platoons of police force were deployed in the area to check escalation of tension.
