Ex-advisor surrenders

March 19, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - ROHTAK:

Professor Virender Singh, former political advisor to former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, surrendered before the Rohtak Police here on Thursday.

Mr. Singh was recently slapped with the case of sedition during the Jat quota agitation. He was remanded in police custody for two days.

Professor Singh decided to surrender before the police after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the Rohtak District and Sessions Court on Tuesday.

Professor Singh told the mediapersons that he was a law-abiding citizen and was not running away from the police. The matter is being investigated by a Special Investigation Team headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Pawan Kumar. Professor Virender's counsel J.K. Gakhar told The Hindu that the sessions court, while turning down the bail plea, had observed that sedition charges were not made out against him.

“Professor Virender is heard talking in a sarcastic manner in the audio clip and he could not be slapped with sedition charges for that. The rest of the charges are minor,” said Mr. Gakhar.
