A contingent of Manipur Rifles deployed in Lok Sabha election related duties in Agartala has created panic amongst city dwellers for killing stray and pet dogs to serve their food habit. Bunch of aggrieved people including veteran CPI(M) leader and tribal welfare minister Aghore Debbarma who lost his pet.
Some residents including the minister lodged complaint with the authorities after losing their pet dogs. The troopers of the India Reserve Battalion (IRB) of the Manipur Rifles who are camped at Umakanata Academy School since their arrival a week ago have been blamed.
"Not all of them (troops) indulged in dog killing, but only those are tribal. They have a different food habit and we respect that", a senior district official said on Monday adding they cannot overlook if someone comes with a complaint.
The district officials have communicated the matter to the Commandant of the IRB of Manipur Rifles who in turn expressed his 'regret'. The commandant has also assured to warn his men to refrain from such occurrence during their stay in Tripura.
