Notice to Centre on plea to upload FIRs on websites

May 03, 2016 02:33 am | Updated 02:33 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Supreme Court on Monday sought the government’s response on a petition seeking a direction to the police to upload all First Information Reports (FIRs)within 24 hours of their registration on the official website.

A Bench of Justices Dipak Misra and Shiva Kirti Singh issued notice on the petition filed by the Nainital-based Youth Bar Association of India, which contended that obtaining a copy of the FIR from the police was a near-impossible task and affected the right of a person to apply for bail or defend himself before the law.

Public document

The petition submitted that an FIR was a public document and any person had right to inspect and demand a certified copy in terms of Section 76 of the Evidence Act, 1872.
