With widespread criticism on the social media of actor Nandita Das being featured in a short film to propagate the Union government’s Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save Daughters, Educate Daughters) campaign, the government clarified that an international NGO had produced the programme and the Women and Child Development Ministry just tweeted about it.
This happened after social media criticism of Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi, with people accusing her of making the actor — seen to be ideologically critical of the BJP — its “ambassador”.
“Girl Rising, an International NGO, had produced a short film to propagate the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao message. This film is by Girl Rising and not by the WCD Ministry. The WCD Ministry tweeted the messages of these actors on Beti Bachao as given in the film,” a statement from the Ministry said. “Nandita Das has not been appointed an ambassador of the Ministry on Beti Bachao .”
