A wild elephant calf, rescued from the Kakkeri forest of the Tholpetty forest range of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary on Monday morning, was shifted to the elephant Kraal at Muthanga.
A team of veterinary experts led by V.I. Jijimon , Forest veterinary officer, administered medicines to the calf on Tuesday morning.

“The male calf, aged nearly one and a half months, was rescued by Forest Department officials after it fell into a trench near the Kakkeri tribal colony near Kattikulam. Though the Forest officials tried to reunite the calf with the herd, the elephants did not accept it back, as it had come into contact with humans,” P. Dhaneshkumar, Wildlife Warden, WSS, said.
Later, the calf was shifted to the kraal at Muthanga for treatment, he added.
“The animal is in a critical stage and we have started to administer fluids and antibiotics to it,” Dr. Jijimon told The Hindu .
Meanwhile, the Forest Department have begun steps to shift a one-month-old female elephant calf rescued from the Mannarkad forest division in Palakkad district to the Muthanga elephant kraal.
The elephant calf would be shifted to Muthanga in two days, Dr. Jijimon added.
