Tension at hospital over bribery allegations

August 05, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:03 am IST - KASARAGOD:

There was tension at the General Hospital here on Monday after DYFI and Muslim Youth League workers took out marches alleging that physicians demanded bribe from a Scheduled Tribe woman to perform uterus removal surgery.

They demanded disciplinary action against the doctors for denying her timely medical care.

They alleged that Saraswati, a resident of the Madhur locality, was asked to discharge herself from the hospital after she reportedly refused to pay extra money sought by the gynaecologist and the anaesthetist.

The woman is said to have filed a formal complaint with the Health Minister and the Minister in charge of SC/ST Welfare narrating her experience at the hospital, where she was admitted on Monday.

Though the surgery was scheduled for Thursday, she was asked to discharge herself from the hospital after she declined to pay the additional amount sought by the physicians, the woman alleged in her complaint.

When contacted, District Medical Officer A.P. Dinesh Kumar said there was no prima facie evidence to prove the charge against the doctors and he had spoken to the doctors concerned.

The DMO said he would discuss the issue with the District Collector and the local MLA in the presence of the hospital management committee on Friday and take appropriate action after verifying the versions of the physicians and the woman.
