Row over police action

August 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 29, 2016 04:33 pm IST - KANNUR:

The District Police Chief (DPC) and the district panchayat president are apparently not in agreement with each other over the police action against the driver of the latter’s official vehicle for unauthorised parking here.

What triggered the row was the Town Traffic Sub Inspector’s instruction to take the district panchayat president’s official vehicle to the traffic police station for parking in a no-parking area on the road to the eastern entry of the railway station here on August 19. DPC P.N. Unnirajan defended the police action saying that the officer concerned had not done anything wrong.

“The police should act against unauthorised parking even if his official vehicle was involved,” he said.

The district panchayat president’s take on the issue was that the police officer had treated her driver badly while directing him to take the vehicle to the police station. She said that the driver was in the vehicle parked on the roadside when she went to attend a programme at Police Co-operartive Society Hall here on Wednesday afternoon. The driver would have taken the vehicle from there if asked by the police.
