Amid tension in view of the clashes between workers of the CPI(M) and the BJP-RSS combine, the district police at circle levels have taken the initiative to allot separate spots for functions by the rival groups on September 5 in different parts of the district.
Pro-CPI(M) organisations, including its children’s and women’s organisations, have already secured permission for holding programmes in 300 centres of the district to mark the culmination of the Onam festival on September 5, when the Sree Krishna Jayanthi celebration involving children is being planned under the aegis of the pro-RSS Balagokulam.
The major flashpoints will be Kannur, Thalassery, Taliparamba, Mattannur, Iritty, Peravur, Kottiyur, and Koothuparamba, where the Balagokulam organises ‘shobha yatras’ in a big way. Police sources said that plans were on to deploy additional forces in those areas after separate spots and routes were allotted for the two separate functions.
Leaders of the rival parties had agreed at a meeting convened by District Collector P. Bala Kiran here recently that they would abide by the decisions taken at the meetings being convened by the circle inspectors. Functionaries of the Balagokulam said on Thursday that they would hold ‘shobha yatras’ in 300 centres in the district.
