Pinarayi comes down heavily on Antony

February 08, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - KOTTAYAM:

Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] Polit Bureau member Pinarayi Vijayan, who is on his Nava Kerala Yatra, has come down heavily on Congress leader A.K. Antony who has endorsed the five-year term of the UDF as the period with the greatest development in the State.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Sunday, Mr. Vijayan said Mr. Antony was challenging the common sense of the people and alleged that contrary to the claims made by Mr. Antony, the State had been pushed into a debt trap by the UDF government.

“During the last five years, the public debt has almost doubled. The debt which stood at Rs.78, 675 crore at the beginning of the UDF tenure has now increased to Rs.1.5 lakh crore. Every child in the State is born with a debt of Rs.47,788,” Mr. Vijayan said.

“Whatever has been done in the name of development was nothing but corruption,” he said, alleging that the Cabinet gave the impression of a den of mafia dons.

‘Identity lost’

The CPI(M) leader alleged that the Congress had lost its identity as a political party since the party discipline had been lost and any leader could get away with corruption charges.

‘‘The deposition made by senior police officers before the solar commission has officially confirmed the charges raised by the accused in the case. However, the Congress has not so far instituted any inquiry into such issues,’’ Mr. Vijayan pointed out.

Reiterating the demand for the resignation of the Chief Minister, Mr. Vijayan said as long as the Chief Minister continued in his position, agitations against him would also continue.
