The district administration has supplied two more dialysis units to the General Hospital (GH) here, a move that would benefit the economically weaker kidney patients avail free dialysis facility.
The funds for the machines worth Rs. 11 lakh, were moped up from the Rs. 21 lakh accrued by hosting the ‘Kasaragod Mahotsavam’, during the past three years, said Collector P. S. Muhammed Sagir who handed over the machines at a function held here on Saturday.
The hospital now can run eight dialysis machines operated in two shifts benefiting 14 patients a day, he said adding that efforts are under way to supply ancillary units worth Rs. 3 lakh to optimise the facility.
A committee headed by the District Collector has been empowered to pick up the eligible patients to avail the facility and medicines free-of-cost.
The function was addressed among others by N. A. Nellikkunnu, MLA, and Additional District Magistrate (ADM) H. Dineshan.
Rs.45 lakh needed
Speaking to The Hindu Mr. Sagir pointed out that a sum of Rs. 45 lakh was required to complete the infrastructure facilities to run the two dialysis machines, gifted by a Pune based philanthropist to the District Hospital in Kanhangad, some three months ago.
Mr. Sagir said that the district administration was taking steps to mop up the required fund by pooling resources from the MLA’s local area development fund to run the machines currently remaining idle.
