Karnataka funding sought for rail line

July 30, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:04 am IST - KANHANGAD:

With the State government allocating Rs.20 crore in the budget for the proposed Kanhangad- Kaniyooru rail line, the rail action committee here has urged the Karnataka government to follow suit to facilitate early commencement of the rail link that provides easy access to Bengaluru from northern Kerala.

A demand to this effect was made during a meeting of the Kanhangad- Kaniyooru rail line action committee and the Kanhangad Nagara Vikasana Karma Samithi here recently.

The office-bearers were of the opinion that the Karnataka government should earmark funds to meet the 50 per cent cost burden as mandated by Railways to commence any such project in the State. The meeting also decided to submit a memorandum to the Karnataka Chief Minister and the Ministers concerned to facilitate funding for the nearly 90-km rail line, part of which is marked in the neighbouring State, samithi chairman P. Appukuttan said.

Feasibility survey

Railways have carried out traffic and feasibility surveys along the 40-km Kanhangad-Panathur stretch on a positive note, about two years ago.
