The ‘debt repayment’ comment by Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] district unit secretary P. Jayarajan, who has been barred from entering the district by court as a condition for his release on bail in the case of the murder of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker E. Manoj, has triggered a row as it has been seen by his political rivals as a justification for political violence.
Mr. Jayarajan, who is an accused in the Manoj murder case, reportedly said at a function in Thiruvananthapuram recently that though the CPI(M) did not initiate political violence, it “repays when it is repeatedly the recipient of debt.”
District Congress Committee president K. Surendran said Mr. Jayarajan’s remarks betrayed his culpability in the incidents of political violence in the district.
‘Register case’
He said the police should register a case against Mr. Jayarajan for the statement justifying violence.
Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said in response to a question during a meet-the-press programme here on Monday that the government would examine the legality of Mr. Jayarajan’s remarks.
The CPI(M) leader’s comment amounted to an admission that the party and its leadership had involvement in the incidents of violence, he added.
