Advanced scanners and cameras that can detect narcotics and contrabands being transported in inter-State trucks would be installed soon at five major check-posts in the State, said Excise Commissioner Rishi Raj Singh on Friday.

Addressing interactive sessions held in Palakkad, Mr. Singh said a proposal to install such facilities had been submitted to the Cabinet for approval. The scanners and cameras would be installed at the Walayar, Manjeswaram, Amaravila, Aryankavu and Muthanga check-posts.

Mr. Singh, who held an interface with students of Palakkad Lions Senior Secondary School in the morning and presided over a meeting of prohibition activists and concerned citizens at the Collectorate later, found time to conduct surprise checks at leading beer and wine parlours in Palakkad town. The parlour at Hotel Sree Chakra International was closed down after the Commissioner detected an illegal additional counter.

Fully computerised check-posts soon

During meetings, Mr. Singh said the State government was committed to making inter-State check-posts corruption-free. Check-post operations would be fully computerised soon.

He said stringent action had been initiated to prevent drug-peddlers targeting students. Amendments have been suggested to the Child Rights Act to ensure punishment to those who carry contraband items.
