Barely days after the onset of the monsoon season, the district has reported an alarming rise in the number of dengue and viral fever cases and the death of an 11-year-old girl due to suspected dengue fever on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Vaishnavi of Nullipady here. Efforts were under way to identify whether the girl’s death was due to dengue, District Medical Officer A.P. Dinesh Kumar told The Hindu on Thursday.
As many as 322 suspected cases of dengue fever, 42 of them confirmed, had been reported from the district, mainly from the hill hamlets, he said.
Affected areas
Most of the dengue fever cases were reported from Kallar, Panathady, Kodom-Belur, Balal, Perla and Muliyar panchayats besides the municipal areas here, he said.
A few diarrhoea cases were reported from the coastal belt of the district.
Malaria
Besides five malaria cases were also reported from Cheruvathur panchayat, he said adding that the symptoms were found among those who visited the area from outside the district.
While the patients are undergoing treatment at various government and private hospitals in the district, a few others are found to be relaying on hospitals in Mangaluru.
Most patients who were admitted to government or private hospitals here were reported to be told to sent their throat swabs either at the Pariyaram Medical College or hospitals in Mangaluru to confirm the disease.
Mr. Dinesh Kumar asked the people to keep their surroundings clean so as to prevent breeding of mosquitoes. Fogging will be take up in select localities.
