Graft case: FIR against former local body chiefs

April 29, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - Thrissur:

The Vigilance on Thursday registered an FIR against former district panchayat presidents K.V. Dasan and C.C. Sreekumar in the Azhikode-Munambam junkar corruption case. Vigilance SP, Ernakulam, is investigating the case.

Former standing committee chairperson (Public Works), Thrissur district panchayat, Vidhya Sangeeth in her petition had alleged corruption in the repair of the junkar between 2009 and 2015. Former Thrissur Vigilance Judge S.S. Vasan, who dismissed the quick verification report filed by the Vigilance SP, ordered that an FIR be registered on February 18, 2016. The quick verification report remarked that though the repair works caused unexpected financial loss, it cannot be considered as corruption. However, the vigilance court ordered to register an FIR after observing that financial loss due to mismanagement could be considered as corruption. It also raised suspicion about spending Rs.1.18 crore for the repair of the junkar within six years.

The FIR was registered against Mr Dasan and Mr Sreekumar, the then standing committee chairperson (Finance) Leela Subramanian, district panchayat former secretary Subhakumar, secretary in charge A.J. Varghese, and former contractor of the junkar service Venugopalan.
