A wild elephant calf was found dead in a kraal in the Muthanga wildlife sanctuary on Wednesday morning. “The six-month-old male calf was found deserted by its herd in Thaliparamba forest and forest personnel brought it to the kraal on February 28. It was very weak and veterinarians had been trying to improve its health condition for the past three months,” sanctuary officials said. A team led by Arun Zachariah, Assistant Professor, Centre for Wildlife Studies, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, and Jijimon, Forest assistant veterinary officer, carried out an autopsy. The carcass was later burnt at Ambukuthy forest under the sanctuary.
