Drought review meet to take up Kasaragod crisis: CM

April 27, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - KASARAGOD:

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Tuesday got a clear picture of the acute drinking water crisis faced by the town and neighbouring areas, where people are forced to use saline water supplied through water authority pipelines during peak summer every year.

When his attention was drawn to the plight of the people residing in the district headquarter town, Mr. Chandy said he would take up the issue at the drought review meeting scheduled in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.

“The drinking water problem faced by the town and adjacent localities will be taken up at the highest level and the official concerned will be asked to report the matter during the meeting,” he said.

As Mr. Chandy was descending the steps of the Press Club after the programme, an elderly woman residing nearby came up to him and lamented over the decades-old water crisis in the area. The Chief Minister assured her that the matter would be taken up at the high-level meeting.

Incomplete project

Though crores of rupees were spent on the unfinished check-dam across the Chandragiri at Bavikkara, the issue of water scarcity continues in the region. The Indian Union Muslim League has been representing the Kasaragod segment eight terms in a row, but the project has still not turned a reality with authorities maintaining that the dam could not be completed due to a host of technical issues.
