Curbs on motorised small boats lifted

July 05, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - ALAPPUZHA:

The restrictions imposed on the operation of shikaras (small boats fitted with motors) in Vembanad Lake last month have been withdrawn. The district administration has withdrawn the curbs on the basis of assurances from those concerned.

Taking tourists in shikaras during monsoon is considered risky. Strong winds and heavy rain could tilt the boat, posing danger to those aboard. The district administration had imposed the curbs on the basis of a report from the police on the danger involved. A couple from Andhra Pradesh had lost their lives in a shikara accident a few years ago. — Special Correspondent
