CPI(M) close to liquor lobby: Chennithala

May 03, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - KALPETTA:

Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has said that the stand of the CPI(M) on liquor policy is quite opportunistic.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Monday, Mr. Chennithala said the strong liquor lobby of the State could influence even the CPI(M) Polit Bureau and the recent statement of CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury that the liquor policy would be amended on the basis of consumption of liquor in the State proved that. Mr. Yechury had welcomed the liquor policy of the State earlier and the sudden change in the decision was because of the alliance with the liquor lobby, Mr. Chennithala added.

The lobby had already conspired with the CPI(M) to weaken the UDF and the public would easily identify it. The UDF would not dilute the liquor policy and would stick to its decision, Mr. Chennithala said.

On Sunday, he alleged on his Facebook page that the liquor lobby was tightening its grip on the CPI(M). Factionalism was extreme in the CPI(M). He wondered how leaders with divergent views could lead the party.

The Congress alone could tackle the growth of BJP at the national level and the propaganda by the LDF that the Congress had made a secret alliance with the BJP was to misguide the minorities and secure their votes, he added.
