Amul-model growth for farm sector mooted

February 11, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - PATHANAMTHITTA:

The farm sector in Kerala badly needed a growth modelled on Amul in Anand district of Gujarat, Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has said.

Mr. Vijayan was addressing a reception accorded to the Nava Kerala March led by him at Thiruvalla on Wednesday.

He said the CPI(M) was for protecting rivers, lakes and other water sources from pollution.

Revival of the farm sector was the need of the hour to make the State self-reliant in food grain and vegetable production, he said.

Mr. Vijayan said the CPI(M) was for an all-inclusive growth of the State that include conservation of water, nature, and environment.

Sustainable development of Kuttanad was the vision of the Left Democratic Front. The M.S. Swaminathan Commission had announced a Kuttanad package worth Rs.1,840 crore. Ironically, the State could implement only projects worth Rs.400 crore and that too have failed to benefit the farmers and the common people, he alleged.

Mr. Vijayan alleged that the State government was yet to sanction its share to the Kuttanad Package.
