Denying that there are rifts in the Left Democratic Front (LDF) over the Kerala Law Academy Law College issue, Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary Kanam Rajendran has said that his party is supporting the agitation over the issue because of the fair demands made by the agitators.
Media creation
Mr. Rajendran told reporters here on Monday that the reported difference between the CPI and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] over the issue was a creation of the media. He also dismissed the charge that the CPI was with the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the law academy row.
Started by students
The agitation had been started by the All India Students Federation, Kerala Students Union, and the Muslim Students Federation on January 11 and the Congress and the BJP joined the agitation 14 days later. The stir started by the students was gradually taken over by the political parties in the wake of the failure of the talks between the students’ organisations and the college management, he said.
No role for party
The CPI leader said that his party had no role in the ongoing agitation, though it was backing the fair demands raised by the agitators. The government had the responsibility to settle the issue amicably, he said stating that the delay in finding a settlement had led to the stir. The government should hold discussions with the students’ organisations to end the agitation, he said.
Probe on
said that the Revenue Department was investigating the row over the land of the academy in response to a complaint submitted by veteran CPI(M) leader and former Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanadan to Revenue Minister E. Chandrashekharan. Mr. Rajendran said that the inquiry was to find the real facts on the land and to examine whether the Revenue Department had taken steps as per law in this regards.
