A Central team will reach here on January 23 to hold discussions on the conduct of fireworks in connection with the famous Thrissur Pooram.

A team led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillor M.S. Samboorna had met Union Minister of State, Commerce and Industry Nirmala Seetharaman recently to express concern over the conduct of fireworks.

The Union Minister had agreed to send an expert team to Thrissur to study the issues. The team is expected to have experts from the Explosives Department.

The team, led by a Joint Secretary of the Petroleum Department, will conduct a meeting at the district Collectorate. They will also hold meetings with festival coordination committee members.

Puttingal tragedy

Against the backdrop of the Puttingal fireworks tragedy, there are demands that a blanket ban be imposed on fireworks.

The Explosives Department has made stringent guidelines for the conduct of fireworks.
