The Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CVTS), Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal University, will organise a workshop on ‘Update in Cardiac Surgery: A glorious past and bright future’ in Manipal on August 30.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Vasudeva B. Pai, Chief Cardiac Surgeon, Kasturba Hospital, said that the first open heart surgery was performed in 1953 and even till the late 60s, patients with cardiac diseases had a bleak future. Within a short span of 50 to 60 years, the field of cardiac surgery had evolved exponentially and most operations were now safe with an overall mortality of 3 to 6 per cent. This workshop has been designed for all medical and paramedical professionals involved in daily care of patients with heart diseases, Mr. Pai said.

350 delegates from across the State to participate in the event
