Anil Thakkar, Urdu playwright and novelist, who is also the member of the Urdu Academy, Bengaluru, has commended the role of the Belgaum Urdu Academy in taking Urdu language to non-Urdu speaking linguistic communities in the city.
Speaking at a function to distribute certificates to students of the first batch of Urdu learning course conducted for free for non-Urdu speaking members here on Sunday, he portrayed the vastness of Urdu language in India, as reflected even in just two-word slogan ‘Inquilab Zindabad’. The phrase was so potent that any change in it would only take away the very soul of the slogan, he said.
General secretary of the academy, Ayeensamad Khanapuri, said Urdu, an Indian language spoken by all sections of the society, was playing a major role in strengthening national integration. He highlighted the objectives of conducting Urdu classes and said they were in response to the growing demand from non-Urdu speaking people. Urdu was one of the most widely spoken languages and had produced Jnanapith-award winning writers and scholars par excellence, with Urdu poetry and ghazals being highly popular and admired for its rich linguistics and style of expression and sweetness. Academy president Sayyed Niyazahmed expressed similar views. Khaleel Ahmed Soudagar, a retired school teacher and calligrapher was felicitated for his dedication towards teaching the language to non-Urdu speaking persons.
Later, a ‘mushaira’ was organised at Basavaraj Kattimani Hall. The predominant theme was national integration.
