Minister of State for Medical Education and Raichur in-charge Sharan Prakash Patil has said that the third and final round of counselling for aspirants of medical seats would be held after September 15 after the completion of the counselling for the all-India quota of medical seats.

Speaking to The Hindu in Kalaburagi on Sunday, Dr. Patil said that the Supreme Court, had in its recent order, revised the dates for counselling for filling up all-India quota of medical seats in undergraduate courses, and had directed the Union government to complete it in three rounds before September 15.

Only after that process is completed will we know how many seats will be transferred to the State quota. Besides that clarity is also necessary in cases of some private medical colleges which have been denied permission for carrying out admission process by the Medical Council of India, the Minister explained. Dr. Patil added that cases related to admission to medical courses filed by the Union Labour Ministry is pending in the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court, and they are likely to come up for hearing this week. After the hearing of the cases, it will also become clear whether admissions in ESIC Medical Colleges in Bengaluru and Kalaburagi can be taken up or not.

According to him, the third round of counselling of medical seats in the State is likely to see the addition of more medical seats, including 15 seats from the KLE Deemed University-run Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College.

The fate of the additional seats claimed by the State government as State quota from the two more Deemed Universities (NITTE and Yenopaya)-run medical colleges would be known after the final hearing of the appeals made by these two deemed universities challenging the claims of the State government.

If the court decides in our favour, the third round of medical seats would have more number of seats under the government quota”.

To a query, he said that the third round of the counselling for medical seats would be final as per the directions of the Supreme Court which had clearly said that there cannot be any counselling for medical seat admission after September 30.

Dr. Patil said the response from students for admissions in the three new government medical colleges at Kalaburagi, Gadag and Koppal has been overwhelming, and that all the seats have been taken.
