Members of Shille Kyata, a Scheduled Caste community residing at Angadihalli in Belur taluk, staged a protest in Hassan on Friday demanding suitable land to till and settle on.
The community, with a few hundred families, has been settled in Angadihalli for decades. The protesters, who arrived in Hassan in their traditional attire, took out a procession on B.M. Road and staged a dharna in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner. They said none of them have had any land to till all these years. They move from one place to another and make ends meet by holding puppet shows.
In a memorandum submitted to the DC, they said there were vast tracts of government land in Halebidu and Madihalli hoblis. They argued that 800 acres of government land in in Idallu Kavalu in Halebidu hobli, 2,653 acres in Shivapura Kaval in Madihalli hobli, and 669.34 acres in Hagare Kavalu were available to be granted to them. They demanded that at least four acres be allotted to each family.
