Residents of around 15 villages blocked a stretch of the Nanjangud–Sira Road for more than four hours on Wednesday to draw the attention of authorities to the poor condition of the road.
The stretch between Sathanur in Mandya taluk and Koppa in Maddur taluk was dotted with innumerable potholes, causing problems for motorists, they said.
The residents have been demanding that the district administration repair the stretch. The authorities had not taken any steps to repair the road even after several people were killed in road accidents, they alleged.
Residents of Sathanur, Kommerahalli, Hulivana, Mariligana Doddi, Keregodu, Ankannana Doddi, Kallumanti Doddi, Hallegere, Chandagalu, Challanayakana Halli, Hosagavi, Koppa, Kowdle and a few other villages participated in the protest. They prevented movement of traffic using cattle and bullock carts at more than 20 places on the stretch. They also cooked food on the road.
Mandya tahsildar B.K. Mamatha visited the protest sites and assured them that patch works would be carried out shortly.
However, the protesters urged her to give it in writing that she would take steps to immediately repair the road.
The official said that Rs. 3 crore had been allocated to repair the road.
