The Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM) has set up a pre-university college at Saragur in the tribal-dominated H.D. Kote taluk.

SVYM, started in 1984, has been working in the sectors of health, education, socio-economic empowerment, and training and research to promote scientific temperament among the community, particularly in rural areas. It runs mobile science labs to support government schools and has also set up a science exploratory park.

Its Viveka PU College at Saragur will be inaugurated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday by Prof. N.M. Rao, the retired HoD, Department of Mathematics, Regional Institute of Education. Sri Shadakshari Swami of Gurumalleswara Pattada Mutt, Dadadahalli, A.S.K.V.S. Sharma, senior principal scientist, CFTRI, Mysuru, and M.A. Balasubramanya, secretary and CEO, SVYM, will be present.

“The college has well-trained lecturers and well-furnished classrooms and laboratory facilities. For academics, the college is receiving mentoring support from the academic institution BASE, Bengaluru,” a release said. The inaugural function will be followed by three scientific sessions for students of government schools and PU colleges.

In addition to the sessions by Prof. Rao and Mr. Sharma, a hands-on session by Yasasvi Raj, who studies in the United States, has been arranged. The session aims to introduce science and engineering to students and is being supported by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the release added.
