A couple from Kottegala village in H.D. Kote taluk died when their motorcycle was knocked down by a tipper truck at Bogadi Ring Road Junction here on Monday.

The deceased have been identified as Hema (40) and Kodandaram (46). While Hema died on the spot, Kodandaram, who suffered serious injuries and was in critical condition, died at a private hospital.

The truck rammed the motorcycle when the couple reportedly took a turn towards a residential locality along the Outer Ring Road (ORR).

The bodies were later shifted to K.R. Hospital mortuary where villagers had gathered following the tragedy. The truck driver is said to be absconding.

The accident triggered a protest at the accident site from residents, who demanded measures to prevent accidents at ORR junctions.

Most residents complained of rash and reckless driving by truck drivers, endangering the lives of residents who frequent the ORR stretch. In the past, there were several mishaps but no measures were taken, they alleged.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) N.D. Birje told The Hindu that steps to intensify patrolling by the traffic teams along the ORR stretches will be taken in the wake of the accident.

“We will discuss with the local authorities and deploy measures for the safety of people living along the ring road,” he said.
