Film-maker B. Suresha on Sunday stressed the need to organise regular workshops on film-making to encourage youngsters to enter the world of cinema.

He was speaking at an interaction programme held here as part of the award distribution programme of a short film contest titled ‘Ambegalu’, organised by Bellimandala, the district unit of the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy, and Yugadharma Janapada Samiti.

The competition had received 54 entries. Mr. Suresha, who was a member of the panel of judges, said the infusion of fresh blood to cinema would be possible only if youths are trained in various aspects like cinematography and screenplay writing. Senior directors, script writers and technicians should be roped in for this purpose, he said.

Mr. Suresha said the Kannada industry produces more than 200 films a year. The professionals and artistes who can improve the quality of Sandalwood would come from such workshops and training programmes, he said.

Addressing the gathering, director B.S. Lingadevaru said that cinema that has the potential to bring about positive transformation in society should be considered as a serious art form. In many cases, critically acclaimed films fail to reach the public. So the audience too need to be provided orientation to enjoy and appreciate such films, he said.

D.S. Arun, president of Yugadharma Janapada Samiti, Himantharaju G., assistant director of the Department of Information, and Vaidya, convener of Bellimandala, were present.
