Mega horticulture fair in Vijayapura from Dec 12

With an objective to promote horticulture in the State, the University of Horticulture Sciences­Bagalkot (UHS­B), will organise four days mega horticulture fair from December 12 with the help of Horticulture Ministry in Bagalkot.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, D.L. Maheshwar, Vice Chancellor of the University, said that ‘Mechanisation for prosperity’ was the theme of the fair.

“The reason for selecting this theme is to encourage the farmers use mechanical equipments for farming mainly when the shortage of labours is the major problem being faced by the agrarians”, he said.

Dr. Maheshwar said that for exposing the farmers to new technologies, the University had invited nearly 450 vendors to set up their stalls at the fair.

He said that the University expects at least 5 lakh visitors including, farmers, researchers, extension functionaries, self help groups (SHGs), distributors and dealers of farm inputs and machineries and officials.

Dr. Maheshwar said that organisations such as National Horticulture Board, National Horticulture Mission, NABARD, Karnataka Farmers Resource Center, Karnataka Pradesh Krishik Samaj, Indian Council of Agricultural Research and their constituent research institutions, Karnataka Vikasa Grameena Bank, State Bank of India, Jain Irrigations Systems Limited and other stake holders were joining hands with University for the success of the event.

He said that other attractions of the fairs were would be exhibition and sale of quality seed and planting material.

Horticulture show comprising of fruits, flowers, vegetables, plantation crops, spices, medicinal and aromatic crops, post harvest technologies.

“On the occasion, best Horticulture Farmer/Farm women award would be given to achievers of 23 districts of the State. Best innovator award, best innovator award for students (Farm machinery) and best livestock breed award would also be give”, Dr. Maheshwar said.

Stating that financial assistance was critical aspect for the farmers, he said that information would be given on various banking facilities being offered to the farmers.

He said that Precision farming and micro­irrigation would be demonstrated during the fair.

“We hope that our efforts would help the farmers to gain more and best knowledge in horticulture for increasing their revenue and also of the State exchequer”, Dr. Maheshwar said.
