The Fifth Additional District and Sessions Court in Sagar city has sentenced a man to 10 years imprisonment for raping a woman. The 32-year-old victim is visual and hearing impaired.

The police had arrested the accused, Praveen, a resident of Lavigere village in Sagar taluk in December 2015. The police said that Praveen had promised to marry the victim. However, when she became pregnant, he refused to marry her.

The woman had delivered a baby girl in December 2015. Born pre-maturely, the child suffered many health problems and did not survive.

DNA test conducted

The police had arrested Praveen and had booked cases under section 376 (punishment for rape) and 417 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code against him. They had collected blood samples of the accused, the victim and the deceased infant and sent them for DNA matching test. The result had proved that Praveen was father of the baby. Public prosecutor V.G. Yelageri argued that the arrested should be meted stern punishment.

Judge Maheshwari Hiremath found the accused guilty of the rape charge and sentenced him to 10 years of imprisonment. The Court has also slapped a fine of Rs. 50,000 on the convicted. Of this, an amount of Rs. 45,000 should be paid to the victim as compensation.
