Based on a complaint by Bhoomi Geethe Association secretary M. Murugesh, the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission, Registrar, has instructed the Chief Secretary of the State government and the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests to submit a detailed report on the stiff resistance from the public and organisations to install wind turbines at the centre of the Jogimatti reserve forest area within six weeks and has listed the case for 28 October.
Detailing the order issued by the commission, Mr. Murugesh said that Jogimatti is a wide-spread hilly reserve forest area (10,048 hectares) having some wild life, possibly panther, wolf jackal and rare species of birds.
He added that the forest is like a lung space to Chitradurga surrounded by rocky hills with high temperature just bearable during winter and intolerable during summer.
“The power generation needs of the State could not be at the cost of a healthy environment essential for the life of residents of Chitradurga,” he said.
