Heavy rainfall in Chikkodi, Athani

May 19, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - BELAGAVI:

At least 100 trees were uprooted, 20 houses lost their tin roofs and 30 electricity poles damaged due to strong winds and heavy rain in drought-hit Athani and Chikkodi taluks of Belagavi district on Wednesday, according to preliminary reports reaching the two taluk headquarters.

Yet, the locals welcomed the much-awaited rainfall which brought down the evening and night temperatures, even as normal life was disrupted for more than one hour.

Sources said that trees got uprooted and tin roofs of houses flew off and fell on roads, affecting normal vehicular movement. Electricity poles were damaged, a majority of them in Athani taluk, affecting power supply to some of the villages. The losses are being assessed.

However, there were no reports of any harm to the villagers or livestock, the sources added.

Heavy rain lashed Belagavi city and surrounding areas in the evening, leaving several low-lying roads and streets, open drainage lines and gutters flooded, affecting normal life and vehicular traffic.

The downpour in the evening and a few brief spells of rain received last week have brought down both day and night temperatures.
