Superintendent of Police K.T. Balakrishna on Friday said that the matter of issuing safety guidelines to school buses and other vehicles carrying schoolchildren would have to be decided at a meeting of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA).
He told reporters that a committee under the previous SP, K. Annamalai, had submitted a report about two months ago on the measures to be taken to improve safety of vehicles carrying children to school.
The committee was set up in the backdrop of the tragic death of eight schoolchildren in a road accident at Trasi village near Kundapur on June 21.
Mr. Balakrishna said that the recommendations of the committee would be decided at the RTA meeting. District in-charge Minister Pramod Madhwaraj too has given directions for implementation of the recommendations, he said.
To a query on traffic problems in Udupi, Mr. Balakrishna said that traffic signals at various junctions have not been working for the last two years. Efforts are on to repair them, he said. “We have received funds for the repair work and are making provisions for their annual maintenance. We will implement the helmet rule strictly,” he said.
